Is there a lot of yelling in your home?

adhd emotions parenting Jul 16, 2025

If the tension is high in your home—raised voices, short fuses, and that feeling of walking on eggshells—you’re not alone. The good news? These dynamics can improve. When both parents and teens begin to shift how they respond—not just react—real change becomes possible. It takes the whole household, and even small changes can start to make a big difference.

In this video, I introduce a practical 3-step tool called VCR—designed to help calm the chaos and reset the emotional tone at home. While I originally presented it to a teen named Charlie (who bravely reached out about his parents’ yelling), this tool is just as powerful for you as a parent.

Here’s what VCR stands for:

💬 V = Validate
Learn how to acknowledge your child’s emotions—and your own—without judgment or defensiveness.

🔧 C = Create
Shift from blame to brainstorming. Co-create solutions that keep everyone engaged and on the same team.

🧘 R = Restraint
Practice the art of staying grounded and composed, especially in emotionally charged moments.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s participation.
When anyone in the household begins to practice emotional maturity, the atmosphere starts to shift. And when parents and teens use the same language and tools, progress becomes faster—and far more lasting.

Transform your teen into a successful student using science-based strategies.
